SCATT for Birds
Vetafarm SCATT liquid for birds is a drop-on-the-skin product for two different mites that trouble pet birds: air sac mites, which live in the airways, and scaly face or scaly leg mites, which burrow into the skin of the cere, beak and legs.
Canaries, finches, budgies and other small birds are the usual patients. Each bird gets its own few drops, measured by body weight.

Which mite is it? Signs by type
Air sac mites
Live inside the windpipe and air sacs (Sternostoma tracheacolum).
- Breathing that clicks or squeaks
- Tail bobbing in time with each breath
- Beak held open to breathe
- A canary or finch that stops singing or loses its voice
Scaly face & scaly leg mites
Burrow into the skin and feed on keratin.
- Honeycomb-textured crusting around the cere
- Crusting that spreads to the beak and eyelids
- Rough, crusted legs and feet; in severe cases the vent
- Left untreated, the beak can become deformed enough to make eating and drinking hard
These signs can overlap with bacterial or nutritional problems. If symptoms persist after label-directed use, ask your vet about other causes.
SCATT or Ivermectin?
Treating more than one bird? Ivermectin Solution for Birds is dosed through the water bowl, so a whole aviary is covered at once with no catching or handling.
Both are used against the same bird mites. The real difference is how the dose reaches the bird.
- SCATT: you hold each bird and place the drops on its skin yourself. A good fit for a single bird that tolerates handling, such as a newcomer kept apart in quarantine before it meets the others.
- Ivermectin Solution for Birds: goes into the water bowl, so every bird drinks its dose and nobody has to be caught. A good fit for a whole aviary or for nervous birds.

How it is applied
Clear rule: SCATT is placed on the skin as drops — never added to the drinking water.
Directions:
- Apply 1 drop per 30g body weight
- Finches & canaries: typically 1 drop
- Larger birds: 2 drops
- Apply to bare skin between the shoulders
- Repeat treatment after 21 days
For prevention, treatment is commonly repeated every 3–4 months.
Always prefer the printed label in your bottle if wording differs, and confirm the plan with your veterinarian.

Important treatment notes
- Scaly face mites pass easily from bird to bird, so Vetafarm advises treating every bird in the aviary together
- These burrowing mites are harmless to people
- Because these mites live on the bird itself rather than in the cage, Vetafarm notes the cage does not need a mite spray for them; routine cleaning of perches and nest areas is still good practice
- Stress and illness can make an outbreak more likely
When mites may not be the only problem
If symptoms continue after label-directed treatment, underlying issues may include bacterial infections, other respiratory disease, or nutritional gaps (including Vitamin A concerns). Additional veterinary care may be needed.

Can SCATT be used on all birds?

Do I need to spray the cage as well?
Not for these mites. Vetafarm notes that air sac and scaly face mites live on the bird’s body rather than in the cage, so the cage does not need a mite spray to deal with them. Keep up normal cage cleaning.
Can mites spread between birds?
Yes. Vetafarm describes scaly face mites as highly contagious between birds, which is why every bird in the aviary should be treated at the same time. They are harmless to people.
