VetRx Poultry: a time-tested remedy for your flock
When a hen starts sneezing or sounds a little rattly, most keepers want something gentle on the shelf. VetRx Poultry Aid from Goodwinol is based on a formula in use since 1874. It is a warm, aromatic blend of camphor and herbal oils that you apply to the bird, add to the waterer or run in a vaporizer.
The label says it is for the support of healthy upper respiratory function in all varieties of poultry. Many keepers know it simply as VetRx for chickens.

How keepers use VetRx for chickens
- Upper respiratory support: a few warm drops down the throat at night, and rubbed over the head and under the wings
- Flock care: a few drops in the waterer each time you change it, or a warm solution sprayed over the birds
- Coop care: a few drops sprinkled in the litter every four or five days
- Show birds: a drop under one wing for travel to and from shows
- Legs, combs and wattles: rub on dry shanks and toes, and dress the comb and wattles for a natural luster
When birds roost with their heads under their wings, body heat carries the aromatic vapors through the coop.
Directions from the label
These directions are for bantams and mature poultry of a similar size. For larger or smaller birds, change the amount in proportion to the size of the bird.
Warm it first
- Open the cap and stand the bottle in a small pan of water
- Heat at medium temperature, then test the temperature before use
Individual birds
- Place a few drops of warm VetRx, straight from the bottle, down the throat at night
- Rub some warm VetRx over the head and under the wings
- Or mix 1 teaspoon into 1 cup of very warm water. A stronger mix is 1 teaspoon in ½ cup of hot water. Swab the throat and wash the head and eyes four or five times a day
Whole flock
- Add a few drops to the drinking water each time you change it
- Or spray warm solution over the flock with a small sprayer kept in hot water
- Vaporizer: hot-water models only. Fill the cup with full-strength VetRx and run it for at least one hour while birds roost
Dry legs
- Rub a small amount of cold VetRx into the shanks and toes. Repeat every three days until the legs are no longer dry

Why does VetRx need to be warmed?
