VetRx for birds: a classic cage-bird remedy

Small birds can go downhill fast when they are stressed, chilled or off their food, so many owners keep a gentle remedy on hand. VetRx Caged Bird Aid from Goodwinol is based on a formula in use since 1874. It is a warm, aromatic blend of camphor and herbal oils that you apply to the bird or add to its water.

The label says VetRx supports healthy upper respiratory function and can help get your birds back on feed. It can also help keep face and legs clean and free from flaking.

Quick facts

  • Brand: VetRx by Goodwinol
  • Size: 2 fl oz (59 ml)
  • Form: liquid, used warm or at room temperature
  • Ingredients: Canada balsam, camphor, oil of origanum, oil of rosemary in a corn oil base; 3.3% alcohol
  • For: canaries, parakeets (budgies), lovebirds, parrots, cockatiels, finches and macaws

Before using

  • Read the full directions on your box
  • Make sure the cage is clean, warm and dry
  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • For animal use only. Not for human consumption
  • Keep away from children

How bird owners use VetRx

  • Upper respiratory support: drops of warm solution in the nostrils and down the throat at night
  • Under the wings: a few warm drops, so body heat releases the aromatic vapors
  • In the water: a few drops each time you change it
  • Scaly legs and face: a thin film applied with a cotton swab
  • Cage care: a few drops in the litter, and warm VetRx rubbed on perches

VetRx does not stain, and will not harm feathers or wings.

Directions from the label

Upper respiratory support

  • Make certain the cage is clean, warm and dry
  • Warm VetRx first: open the cap and place the bottle in warm water
  • Mix 1 teaspoon of warm VetRx into ½ cup of warm water (it mixes with warm water and floats on cold water)
  • With an eye dropper, drip 2 drops of the diluted solution into the nostrils, twice daily for 4 days. If this is difficult, rub 2 drops full strength under the wings instead
  • Put 3 drops of the diluted solution down the throat at night. Continue for 4 days
  • Add 2 drops, full strength from the bottle, to clean drinking water daily for 5 days

Legs and feet

  • Use VetRx at room temperature, straight from the bottle. Apply to scaly areas with a cotton swab and rub in well, once daily for one week
  • After the fifth or sixth day, scales should come off by themselves or with gentle rubbing. Then apply to the feet and legs three times monthly
  • Avoid soaking the feathers

Face

  • Use VetRx at room temperature, straight from the bottle. With a cotton swab, apply a thin film to the scaly area twice a day for five days
  • Keep VetRx out of your bird's eyes, and work slowly and carefully near the eyelids

Keeping birds healthy

  • Mix 3 drops of warm VetRx into the drinking water each time you change it
  • Sprinkle a few drops of warm VetRx in the litter every five days
  • Once a week, rub 2 to 3 drops of warm VetRx under the wing
  • Rub perches with warm, full-strength VetRx twice a month

Good cage habits

  • Keep birds away from drafts and from excessive cold or heat
  • Never place the cage close to windows, doors, heating ducts, fans or air conditioners
  • Keep the cage clean and dry, with clean litter on the floor
  • Change drinking water often, and keep it at a moderate temperature

Not an antibiotic: VetRx is a camphor and herbal-oil remedy. Caged birds that are very sick, stop eating or get worse need an avian vet. Consult a licensed veterinarian when needed.
