Monthly heartworm prevention for dogs

Heartworm Tablets for Small, Medium and Large Dogs

Heartworm Tablets for Dogs provide a convenient once-monthly option for helping prevent canine heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis. Choose the tablet that corresponds with your dog's current weight and select a package containing 6, 20 or 100 tablets.

How Monthly Heartworm Prevention Works

Heartworm disease begins when an infected mosquito bites a dog and deposits microscopic larvae. These larvae develop within the dog's body and can eventually mature into adult worms affecting the heart, lungs and nearby blood vessels.

A monthly heartworm preventive does not treat established adult heartworms. Its purpose is to eliminate susceptible immature larvae acquired during the previous month. Consistent monthly administration is therefore important.

Monthly reminder: Give the tablet on the same date each month and record each dose. Phone, calendar or subscription reminders may help prevent missed doses.

Directions for Use

  1. Confirm your dog's current weight.
  2. Select the Small, Medium or Large tablet for that weight range.
  3. Give one correctly sized tablet orally once each month.
  4. The tablet may be crushed into food if this is permitted by the specific product directions.
  5. Observe your dog to ensure the complete dose has been swallowed or consumed.
  6. Continue monthly treatment according to veterinary guidance.

Follow the package label and your veterinarian's instructions. Do not give additional doses to make up for a missed tablet without first obtaining veterinary guidance.

Important testing requirement: Dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before beginning a heartworm-prevention program. Preventive tablets do not eliminate established adult heartworms. Contact a veterinarian if your dog's heartworm status is unknown or if monthly prevention has been interrupted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Heartworm Tablet does my dog need?

Select Small for dogs up to 25 lb, Medium for dogs weighing 26–50 lb, or Large for dogs weighing 51–100 lb. Dogs over 100 lb require an appropriate combination determined according to the product label or veterinary guidance.

How often are the tablets given?

Give one correctly sized tablet once each month, following the product label and your veterinarian's directions.

What package sizes are available?

Small, Medium and Large Dog tablets are each available in packages of 6, 20 or 100 tablets.

How long will each package last?

For one dog, 6 tablets provide six monthly doses, 20 tablets provide twenty monthly doses, and 100 tablets provide one hundred monthly doses. The supply will last for a shorter period when shared among multiple dogs.

Can the tablet be crushed into food?

It may be crushed into food when allowed by the product directions. Make sure the dog consumes the entire portion so the complete dose is received.

Can I split a Large Dog tablet for a smaller dog?

Do not divide or substitute tablet strengths unless the product label or your veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. Use the strength intended for your dog's weight.

Can puppies take Heartworm Tablets?

These tablets are intended for dogs six weeks of age or older when used according to the applicable product label. Consult a veterinarian before starting a puppy on heartworm prevention.

Can they be used in pregnant or breeding dogs?

Applicable ivermectin tablet directions indicate use at the recommended heartworm-prevention dose in pregnant or breeding females and stud dogs. Confirm the directions for the exact product supplied and consult your veterinarian when appropriate.

Should my dog be tested before starting?

Yes. Dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before beginning a prevention program. Your veterinarian can advise on testing and an appropriate prevention schedule.

What should I do if a monthly dose is missed?

Contact your veterinarian for guidance, particularly when prevention has been interrupted for an extended period. Do not give two doses at once unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so.

Do these tablets treat adult heartworms?

No. Monthly preventive tablets are not an adult-heartworm treatment. A dog diagnosed with heartworm disease requires veterinary evaluation and an appropriate treatment plan.

Choose the Right Monthly Heartworm Protection

Select your dog's weight category and choose a package of 6, 20 or 100 tablets. Consistent monthly prevention, appropriate veterinary testing and correct weight-based selection are important parts of protecting your dog from heartworm disease.
