VetRx for pigeons: a classic loft remedy

Racing and show pigeons work hard, and fanciers like to keep a trusted remedy in the loft. VetRx Pigeon Aid from Goodwinol is based on a formula in use since 1874. It is a warm, aromatic blend of camphor and herbal oils that you apply to the bird, add to the water or run in a vaporizer.

The label says it is for the support of healthy upper respiratory function in all varieties of racing and show pigeons. Regular use can help keep your pigeons healthy and their eyes clean and clear. It is a simple pigeon medicine cabinet staple.

Not an antibiotic: VetRx is a camphor and herbal-oil remedy. Pigeons that are very sick, stop eating or get worse need an avian vet. Consult a licensed veterinarian when needed.

VetRx Pigeons FAQ

What is VetRx for pigeons?

VetRx Pigeon Aid is a camphor and herbal-oil remedy from Goodwinol. The label says it is for the support of healthy upper respiratory function in all varieties of racing and show pigeons, for internal and external application.

How do I use VetRx on pigeons?

Warm the bottle in a small pan of heated water, shake well and test the temperature. Mix 1 teaspoon into ½ cup of very warm water, then put 2 drops of the solution into each nostril for seven days. You can also put a drop of warm, full-strength VetRx under each wing. Follow the full directions on your box.

Can I put VetRx in my pigeons' drinking water?

Yes. For healthy birds, the label says to add 6 drops of VetRx per gallon of clean drinking water. If small oil globules rise to the top, that is the oil congealing, and the label notes it is pure and edible.

Is VetRx a pigeon medicine or an antibiotic?

VetRx is an over-the-counter animal remedy, but it is not an antibiotic. If a pigeon is very sick, stops eating or gets worse, call an avian vet.

Can I use VetRx in a vaporizer?

Yes, with a hot-water vaporizer only. Fill the cup with VetRx and run it for at least one hour while the birds are roosting, no more than twice a week.

Should I use it after races or shows?

The label says many owners place VetRx under the wings of birds returning from races or shows. It also advises isolating birds from the rest of the flock for several days after a show.
