Enrofloxacin 2.5% Oral Solution for Rats – 25 mg/mL

Rat owners know how quickly a sniffle can turn into something that needs a vet. If your rat's vet chooses enrofloxacin, this enrofloxacin 2.5% oral solution (25 mg/mL) lets you measure a small, weight-based dose for an animal that weighs a few hundred grams.

This page gives the labeled dose for rats and a mL-by-weight chart for both small females and big males. Weigh your rat and confirm the plan with your vet.

This enrofloxacin 2.5% oral solution is an alternative to Baytril®: it has the same active ingredient, enrofloxacin.

Enrofloxacin 2.5% Dosage Chart for Rats

Dose for rats: 5 mg per kg = 0.2 mL per kg, given twice daily for 7 days.

How to calculate: Enrofloxacin 2.5% (mL) = body weight (kg) × 0.2. The chart below is per dose.

Body weight Dose (mg) Enrofloxacin 2.5% (mL) Diluted 1:4 (mL of mix)
200 g (7.1 oz) 1 mg 0.04 mL 0.20 mL
300 g (10.6 oz) 1.5 mg 0.06 mL 0.30 mL
400 g (14.1 oz) 2 mg 0.08 mL 0.40 mL
500 g (1.1 lb) 2.5 mg 0.10 mL 0.50 mL
600 g (1.3 lb) 3 mg 0.12 mL 0.60 mL
800 g (1.8 lb) 4 mg 0.16 mL 0.80 mL

Doses under 0.05 mL of undiluted product are hard to measure, so use the diluted 1:4 column (five times the volume). On a 100-unit insulin syringe, 1 unit = 0.01 mL. If the mixed volume is more than 0.5 mL, use a larger syringe with no needle, or ask your vet.

Typical weights vary, so weigh your rat for the most accurate dose. This label-based chart does not replace your vet's directions.

How to Mix and Give Enrofloxacin 2.5%

Mix 1 part product with 4 parts water, as the label recommends.

  1. Weigh your rat and work out the dose from the chart
  2. Mix 1 part Enrofloxacin 2.5% with 4 parts clean water in a clean container
  3. Measure with a 0.5 mL (100 unit) insulin-style syringe and give by mouth with no needle attached. Use a needle-free oral syringe of the same size, or ask your vet or pharmacy.
  4. Give the dose twice daily for 7 days, as directed by your vet
  5. Rinse the syringe after each use and keep the bottle tightly closed

Have your vet show you the right technique for your rat.

Drinking-Water Mix for Rats (100 ppm)

Per the label, the drinking-water dose for rats is 100 ppm, which works out to 0.4 mL of Enrofloxacin 2.5% per 100 mL of water.

Drinking water Enrofloxacin 2.5% to add
100 mL (about 3.4 oz) 0.4 mL
250 mL (about 8.5 oz) 1 mL
500 mL (about 17 oz) 2 mL
1 liter (about 34 oz) 4 mL
  • Medicated water should be made up daily immediately prior to provision, preferably in a glass container
  • Label working range 50–200 ppm; above 250 ppm the medicine can precipitate.
  • Watch how much your rat drinks. If drinking drops, the dose drops too, so tell your vet

The 1:4 mix used for dosing by syringe above is not a drinking-water mix.

Safety and Handling

  • Wear gloves when handling and mixing the medicine, and wash your hands afterward
  • Not for prophylaxis. Do not use it to try to prevent illness; use it only for treatment as directed by your vet
  • Do not combine with aluminum- or magnesium-containing products, macrolides, tetracyclines or phenicols
  • Overdose can cause neurological signs. If you see tremors, loss of coordination or seizures, call your vet right away
  • If you also give probiotics, give them 2–4 hours apart from enrofloxacin doses

Active Ingredient

Enrofloxacin 25 mg/mL (2.5%)

Enrofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used in veterinary medicine for infections caused by susceptible bacteria, when selected and directed by a veterinarian. Ask your vet whether it suits your rat, especially if your animal is very young, pregnant or nursing, has a history of seizures, or is taking other medicine.

When to Call Your Vet Right Away

  • Noisy, clicking or labored breathing
  • Sneezing with red-brown staining around the eyes or nose
  • Stops eating or drinking
  • Lethargy, hunched posture or a rough coat
  • Weight loss
  • Discharge from the eyes or nose

Call your vet right away if you see any of these signs, or if your rat gets worse during treatment.

Supporting Your Rat During Treatment

  • Weigh your rat on a gram scale before dosing
  • Keep the cage clean, dry and well ventilated, with low-dust bedding
  • Keep fresh food and water available and watch intake every day
  • Keep handling gentle and stress low during treatment

Storage

  • Store in the original container, tightly closed
  • Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Keep out of reach of children and other animals
  • Follow the storage and expiry directions printed on the label

Frequently Asked Questions: Enrofloxacin 2.5% for Rats

How much Enrofloxacin 2.5% do I give a rat?
The labeled dose is 5 mg per kg, which is 0.2 mL of the 2.5% solution per kg, twice daily for 7 days. A 400 g rat gets 0.08 mL of product per dose. Weigh your rat and follow your vet's directions.
Can Enrofloxacin 2.5% go in a rat's drinking water?
The label gives 100 ppm for rats, which is 0.4 mL of Enrofloxacin 2.5% per 100 mL of water. Medicated water should be made up daily immediately prior to provision, preferably in a glass container. Watch how much your rat drinks, and tell your vet if drinking drops.
Do I need a vet before giving Enrofloxacin 2.5% to my rat?
Yes. Antibiotics should be used only with a veterinarian's guidance, so your vet can confirm the diagnosis, the dose and the length of treatment for your rat.
Can I use this chart with 10% enrofloxacin products?
No. This chart is for the 2.5% solution (25 mg/mL) only. The 10% solution (100 mg/mL) is four times stronger, so the same mL would be a serious overdose.
Is Enrofloxacin 2.5% returnable?
No. Final sale: medications are non-returnable.
